A monochrome woodblock print by Torii Kiyonobu I depicting a performer during the Tanabata festival, defined by bold, calligraphic lines.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonobu I captures a performer engaged in a Tanabata dance. As a founder of the Torii school, Kiyonobu I specialised in depictions of kabuki actors, often employing a bold, calligraphic line style known as tan-e. This specific work is a sumizuri-e, a monochrome print produced using only black ink on paper. The artist uses thick, sweeping lines to define the movement of the performer's robes, which are decorated with motifs of clouds, birds, and geometric patterns.
The figure carries a bamboo branch, a traditional element associated with the Tanabata festival, which celebrates the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi. The composition is balanced, with the dancer's posture suggesting a moment of graceful motion. The artist's signature and seal are visible in the lower right corner, identifying the work as a product of the early Edo period.
Kiyonobu I was instrumental in establishing the visual language of the theatre print. His work often features exaggerated poses and strong outlines, designed to convey the energy of the stage. This print demonstrates the technical precision of early Japanese woodblock printing, where the clarity of the line work takes precedence over colour. The paper shows the natural ageing expected of a work from this period, providing a tactile quality to the print. This piece offers a clear view into the aesthetic priorities of the early eighteenth-century Japanese art scene, focusing on the stylised representation of the human form and the decorative potential of traditional costume.
