An early eighteenth-century Japanese woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu I, featuring a woman in a patterned kimono with bold, calligraphic lines.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu I captures a female figure in a graceful, standing pose, characteristic of the early Ukiyo-e tradition. The artist, a member of the Torii school, was known for his work related to the kabuki theatre, often producing prints that featured actors or women in theatrical attire. The composition relies on bold, sweeping lines to define the silhouette of the kimono, which is decorated with motifs of birds and floral patterns. The use of black ink on paper creates a stark contrast, focusing the viewer on the graphic quality of the robes rather than realistic shading or depth.
The figure is depicted with a gentle tilt of the head, a common stylistic choice in early eighteenth-century Japanese prints to convey elegance and poise. The kimono features large, dark-inked bird motifs that dominate the lower and central portions of the garment, balanced by smaller, more delicate patterns near the collar. The artist employs a calligraphic line quality, where the thickness of the stroke varies to suggest the weight and movement of the fabric. This print reflects the aesthetic priorities of the Genroku period, where the focus was on the stylised representation of beauty and fashion. The absence of colour, typical of early sumizuri-e (ink prints), allows the viewer to appreciate the precision of the woodblock carving and the strength of the artist's draftsmanship. This work is a clear example of the early development of the Ukiyo-e genre, which would later expand into more complex, multi-coloured compositions. The print remains a study in balance, using the negative space of the paper to frame the figure effectively.
