Tan Hill Inn in North Yorkshire stands alone beside a cleared road, its stone walls and dark-roofed annexe surrounded by snowy moors and distant rolling ridges in bright winter light.
Near Keld in Swaledale, Tan Hill Inn stands 528 metres above sea level and is Britain’s highest public house. The inn dates from the seventeenth century. Its exposed beams and stone-flagged floor preserve the character of a historic meeting place in the Yorkshire uplands.
The low stone building occupies a broad white landscape, with pale windows and a blue-grey annexe below a dark roof. A road cuts horizontally across the snow in front. Brown grass breaks through the nearest drifts beside a dry-stone wall. Beyond the inn, gentle ridges fade into blue-grey distance under large sunlit clouds in a crisp winter sky.
