He is considered one of the most influential children's book creators of his generation and, along with William Morris, a central figure in the Arts and Crafts movement. Crane's work spanned illustration, painting, textile design, and interior decoration. His style often incorporated elements of Pre-Raphaelitism, Japonism, and the Aesthetic movement. 'Syracuse, Anapo River' depicts a tranquil scene along the banks of the Anapo River in Sicily. The composition focuses on the dense vegetation, dominated by papyrus plants, which create a screen-like effect. The water reflects the surrounding foliage, adding depth to the image.
