Description
One broad sycamore stands alone in a deep dip between two steep grassy slopes at Sycamore Gap, beyond a meadow of yellow buttercups and pink spikes.
Pink-flowered grass spikes rise in the foreground, and rocky outcrops edge both hillsides. Soft lilac-bottomed clouds roll above the gap, and a low line of broken stone runs along the slopes either side of the tree. The tree's rounded crown is a fresh summer green against pale blue sky, and a thin pale path of trodden grass leads toward its trunk.
This notch on Hadrian's Wall, near Henshaw, is among the best-known views in northern England. Sycamore Gap here shows the tree in full leaf, bright and calm, with the buttercup meadow leading straight to it and the sky left wide open.
