A detailed 18th-century engraving by Bernard Picart depicting the biblical scene of Susanna and the Elders.
This fine art print depicts the biblical narrative of Susanna and the Elders, a subject frequently explored by European artists for its dramatic tension and moral weight. The scene captures the moment of confrontation, where Susanna, seated by a garden fountain, is approached by two men. The composition utilises the classic Baroque approach to light and shadow, creating a sense of theatre within the garden setting. The figures are rendered with precise anatomical detail, typical of the period's academic training.
Bernard Picart, a French engraver who spent much of his career in Amsterdam, was known for his technical mastery of the copper plate. His work often involved the reproduction of classical themes and religious texts. The print features a multi-lingual inscription at the base, which provides context for the scene, referencing the Book of Daniel. The surrounding foliage and the stone architecture of the fountain are executed with fine, controlled lines, demonstrating the artist's ability to balance human figures with their environment. The contrast between the soft, draped fabric of the figures and the hard, textured stone of the fountain edge provides a visual anchor for the viewer. This piece serves as an example of the high-quality printmaking traditions that flourished in the early 18th century, where narrative clarity and technical precision were held in equal regard.
