Vincent van Gogh painted this study of sunflowers during his time in Arles, France. The work belongs to a series he produced to decorate his studio in the Yellow House, intended to welcome his friend and fellow artist Paul Gauguin. Van Gogh utilised a limited palette to explore the tonal possibilities of yellow, ranging from pale lemon to deep ochre, set against a contrasting background. The composition focuses on three large sunflower heads, rendered with thick, expressive brushwork.
