A study of sunflowers by Vincent van Gogh, featuring expressive brushwork and a bold contrast between warm yellow tones and a cool background.
Vincent van Gogh painted this study of sunflowers during his time in Arles, France. The work belongs to a series he produced to decorate his studio in the Yellow House, intended to welcome his friend and fellow artist Paul Gauguin. Van Gogh utilised a limited palette to explore the tonal possibilities of yellow, ranging from pale lemon to deep ochre, set against a contrasting background. The composition focuses on three large sunflower heads, rendered with thick, expressive brushwork. The application of paint is heavy, creating a tactile surface that captures the texture of the petals and the dense centres of the flowers. The vase sits upon a surface defined by short, horizontal strokes, while the background remains a flat, uniform field of colour. This approach allows the forms of the flowers to dominate the visual space. Van Gogh often used sunflowers as a subject to experiment with colour theory and the emotional potential of paint. By placing warm, golden tones against a cool, greenish-blue backdrop, he achieved a visual tension that draws the eye directly to the organic forms. The work demonstrates his interest in the decorative qualities of painting, moving away from strict naturalism toward a more subjective interpretation of his surroundings. The deliberate arrangement of the flowers, combined with the visible energy of the brushstrokes, provides insight into his working method during this productive period in the south of France.
