A classic Northern Song Dynasty handscroll depicting a serene, mountainous terrain through delicate ink wash and atmospheric perspective.
Summer Mountains is a handscroll attributed to the Northern Song Dynasty painter Qu Ding. The work exemplifies the monumental style of the period, characterised by a focus on the grandeur of nature and the atmospheric qualities of the terrain. The composition follows a horizontal format, guiding the viewer through a series of peaks and valleys that recede into the distance.
Qu Ding employs a sophisticated use of ink wash to create depth and texture. The mountains are rendered with soft, rounded forms, suggesting the lush vegetation of the summer season. The lower sections of the scroll feature water, small boats, and clusters of trees, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the vast environment. The artist uses subtle gradations of tone to evoke the mist and humidity typical of the season, creating a sense of space that feels expansive rather than confined.
This piece is a significant example of the Northern Song approach to nature, where the artist seeks to capture the essence of the physical world through careful observation and technical control. The silk support has aged to a warm, muted tone, which enhances the atmospheric quality of the ink work. The presence of calligraphy and seals on the surface indicates its history as a valued object within the tradition of Chinese connoisseurship. The work remains a primary reference for the study of eleventh-century Chinese ink painting, demonstrating the technical mastery achieved by court painters of the era. Its balanced composition and restrained use of colour reflect the aesthetic values of the time, prioritising harmony and the quiet observation of the natural world.
