Jean-Baptiste Pater, a student of Antoine Watteau, produced this work as part of a series representing the four seasons. The painting displays the characteristic qualities of the French Rococo style, focusing on a light, atmospheric depiction of rural life. The composition is oval, a format frequently employed during the eighteenth century to soften the edges of a scene and draw the viewer into the narrative.
In the foreground, a shepherd rests beneath the shade of a tree, accompanied by his dog and a small flock of sheep. The figures are rendered with loose, fluid brushwork, typical of Pater's approach to capturing movement and casual posture. Beyond this shaded area, the mid-ground opens into a golden field of wheat, where other figures are engaged in the harvest. The background features a distant village with a prominent tower, fading into a soft, hazy horizon line that suggests the warmth of a summer day.
Pater excelled at these small-scale, decorative scenes. While he often painted the 'fête galante' subjects popularised by his master, his work frequently incorporated more grounded, rustic elements. The palette relies on warm, sun-drenched tones, including ochre, pale gold, and soft blues, which unify the sky and the earth. The light appears diffused, creating a sense of calm and stillness that defines the season. This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to balance human activity with the natural environment, maintaining a sense of proportion that avoids overwhelming the viewer with detail. The oval frame reinforces the intimate quality of the scene, making it suitable for domestic display, as was common for such works in the period.
