A serene 1867 oil painting by George Inness, capturing the atmospheric light and rolling hills of the Catskill Mountains in summer.
George Inness painted Summer in the Catskills in 1867, a period when his work began to shift away from the precise, detailed documentation favoured by his contemporaries in the Hudson River School. Instead, this piece demonstrates his early move toward a more atmospheric and subjective approach to the natural world. The composition is anchored by a gentle, rolling meadow where a small herd of cattle grazes, leading the eye toward the distant, hazy silhouette of the Catskill Mountains.
Inness employs a soft, diffused light that washes across the scene, blurring the edges of the trees and the distant hills. This technique creates a sense of unity, where the sky and the earth appear to breathe together. The palette is dominated by various shades of green, ranging from the deep, shadowed tones in the foreground to the lighter, yellowish hues of the sun-drenched grass. The sky, painted with thin, horizontal strokes, suggests the quiet transition of a summer afternoon.
Unlike the dramatic, high-contrast works of earlier American painters, this image prioritises mood and internal coherence. The human presence is minimal, represented only by a small figure in the lower left, which serves to provide a sense of scale rather than narrative focus. By softening the physical boundaries of the objects within the frame, Inness invites the viewer to experience the scene as a memory or a fleeting impression of a specific time and place. This approach to painting, which prioritises the emotional resonance of a scene over topographical accuracy, would eventually lead Inness to become a primary figure in the development of Tonalism in American art.
