A detailed 1570 engraving depicting the summer harvest, designed by Pieter Bruegel the Elder and executed by Pieter van der Heyden.
This engraving, titled Aestas (Summer), belongs to a series depicting the four seasons. While the original design is attributed to Pieter Bruegel the Elder, the print was executed by Pieter van der Heyden and published by Hieronymus Cock in 1570. The composition captures the intense labour of the harvest season, a recurring theme in Bruegel's observations of rural life.
In the foreground, workers are shown in various stages of the harvest. One figure is mid-swing with a scythe, while another rests, drinking from a large vessel. The mid-ground reveals a bustling scene of reapers cutting wheat and gathering sheaves, set against a backdrop of a village with a church spire. The sun, depicted with radiating lines, dominates the upper right, suggesting the oppressive heat of the season.
The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Flemish printmaking tradition. The use of varied hatching and cross-hatching techniques creates texture in the wheat fields, the clothing of the peasants, and the rolling hills. The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the image provides a classical framing for the humble agricultural activities, linking the cycle of the seasons to the broader human experience. This work provides a window into the social and economic realities of the sixteenth-century Low Countries, where the rhythm of life was dictated by the agricultural calendar. The attention to detail, from the tools held by the labourers to the distant village architecture, reflects the artist's interest in documenting the world with clarity and precision.
