A woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi depicting the samurai Sugenoya Kuemon in a moment of intense emotion and action. The work exemplifies Yoshitoshi's skill in portraying dramatic scenes.
Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) was a Japanese printmaker, considered one of the last great masters of ukiyo-e. His career spanned the end of the Edo period and the beginning of the Meiji period, witnessing significant changes in Japanese society and art. Yoshitoshi is known for his dramatic and often violent depictions of historical and mythical subjects, as well as his portraits of actors and beautiful women. His work often reflects the turbulence and uncertainty of his time. 'Sugenoya Kuemon' is a woodblock print that exemplifies Yoshitoshi's skill in portraying intense emotion and action. The print depicts a samurai, Sugenoya Kuemon, in a moment of extreme duress, possibly after a battle or act of seppuku. Blood streams down his face as he grips his sword, his expression a mix of pain and defiance. The dark background and the diagonal lines suggesting rain or wind add to the sense of turmoil. The samurai's clothing, adorned with text, provides a visual contrast to the raw emotion of the scene. The print is a powerful example of Yoshitoshi's ability to capture the psychological depth of his subjects within the ukiyo-e tradition.
