A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Pieter Mortier (I) depicting a humorous scene from the adventures of Sancho Panza.
This etching by the Dutch engraver and publisher Pieter Mortier (I) depicts a scene from the literary tradition surrounding Miguel de Cervantes' Don Quixote. The composition captures a moment of absurdity, showing Sancho Panza engaged in a struggle with an ostrich. The work is characteristic of the period's approach to book illustration, where narrative clarity and dramatic action take precedence over strict realism.
Mortier employs a clear, linear style typical of late seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking. The hatching techniques define the forms of the figures and the surrounding terrain, creating a sense of depth despite the relatively flat application of tone. The scene is framed with a simple border, and the inclusion of text at the top right, 'Tom. 5. Pag. 98', indicates its original purpose as an illustration for a multi-volume edition of the novel.
In the foreground, Sancho Panza is shown in a dynamic pose, sword raised, while mounted on his donkey. The ostrich, an exotic and unusual subject for the setting, provides a humorous contrast to the knightly aspirations of the characters. In the background, a figure on horseback observes the scene, while a cart pulled by another ostrich appears further to the right, adding to the surreal quality of the narrative. The print reflects the widespread European fascination with the adventures of Don Quixote during the early eighteenth century, when publishers frequently commissioned new sets of illustrations to accompany various translations and editions. This piece offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the era, where classical literary themes were interpreted through the lens of contemporary print techniques and stylistic conventions.
