A classic Arts and Crafts textile design by William Morris, featuring thrushes and strawberries in a repeating, nature-inspired pattern.
Strawberry Thief is one of the most recognisable textile designs by William Morris. Produced in 1883, this pattern demonstrates the technical mastery of the indigo-discharge printing process. Morris drew inspiration from the thrushes he observed stealing fruit in the kitchen garden of his countryside home, Kelmscott Manor. The design features a repeating arrangement of birds, strawberries, and floral motifs set against a deep blue background. Morris was a central figure in the Arts and Crafts movement, which prioritised traditional craftsmanship and the beauty of natural forms. He rejected the mass-production methods of the Victorian era, preferring labour-intensive techniques that allowed for greater control over the final aesthetic. The production of this specific textile required multiple stages of printing to achieve the layered colour effects. The design balances the naturalistic depiction of the birds with a structured, symmetrical layout that is characteristic of his work for Morris and Co. This print captures the essence of Morris's philosophy, where utility and beauty exist in harmony. The composition relies on a repeating grid, yet the organic shapes of the leaves and flowers prevent the pattern from appearing rigid. The colour palette, dominated by indigo, soft reds, and muted greens, reflects the natural dyes Morris favoured throughout his career. As a piece of decorative art, it remains a clear example of the movement's focus on bringing nature into the domestic interior through high-quality craftsmanship.
