A nineteenth-century albumen print by Giorgio Sommer documenting the ancient Street of Tombs in Pompeii, capturing the texture and scale of the Roman ruins.
This albumen print by Giorgio Sommer captures the Street of Tombs in Pompeii, a site that drew significant attention from European travellers and scholars during the nineteenth century. Sommer, a German photographer based in Naples, operated one of the most prolific studios of his era, documenting the archaeological excavations of the region with technical precision. His work provided a visual record of the Roman ruins for a public eager to engage with classical history.
The image presents a view of the ancient basalt-paved road, flanked by the remnants of funerary structures. The composition utilises the natural perspective of the street to draw the eye toward the distant horizon, framed by the verticality of the stone archways. The play of light and shadow across the uneven surfaces of the volcanic stone blocks reveals the texture of the site, while the clear, sharp focus typical of Sommer's glass-plate negatives ensures that the architectural details remain legible.
Such photographs were often collected in albums or sold as individual souvenirs to visitors on the Grand Tour. They functioned as both scientific documentation and aesthetic objects, capturing the stillness of the excavated city. The inclusion of the original catalogue number, 5322, at the base of the print indicates its place within Sommer's extensive commercial inventory of Italian sites. By preserving the state of the ruins as they appeared in the late nineteenth century, this print offers a view into the history of archaeological preservation and the development of travel photography as a medium for cultural dissemination.
