A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicting the biblical punishment of the elders from the story of Susanna.
This engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicts the dramatic conclusion to the biblical story of Susanna and the Elders. The scene captures the moment of retribution, where the two men who falsely accused Susanna are themselves subjected to the punishment of stoning. De Bruyn, a Flemish engraver and publisher active in Antwerp and Cologne, demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the period. The composition is balanced, with the two figures of the elders positioned on either side of the central tree, their bodies contorted in the act of throwing stones.
The work is typical of sixteenth-century print culture, which often utilised biblical narratives to convey moral lessons. The Latin inscription at the base provides context for the viewer, identifying the figures and the nature of their crime. De Bruyn employs fine cross-hatching to create depth and texture, particularly in the musculature of the figures and the rough bark of the tree. The background remains relatively sparse, allowing the focus to remain on the central action.
As a printmaker, de Bruyn was known for his ability to translate complex narratives into clear, readable images. This piece reflects the stylistic conventions of the era, where human anatomy was rendered with a focus on muscular definition and dynamic movement. The print serves as a record of the artistic techniques employed during the late sixteenth century, specifically the use of the burin to achieve varied tonal qualities on copper plates. The work is a representative example of the religious iconography that circulated widely in Europe during this period, often found in illustrated bibles or as standalone devotional prints.
