Description

A 1944 still life by Swiss artist Helen Dahm, featuring a potted geranium and a bowl of fruit rendered with expressive brushwork.

Helen Dahm, a Swiss painter active throughout the twentieth century, produced this still life in 1944. The composition features a potted geranium with bright red blossoms positioned beside a bowl filled with fruit. A blue cloth drapes over the edge of the table, providing a cool contrast to the warm tones of the flowers and the terracotta pot. Dahm employs a direct, painterly approach, using visible brushwork to define the forms of the pears and apples resting within the bowl and scattered upon the surface.

The perspective is slightly tilted, a characteristic often found in Dahm's domestic scenes, which brings the objects closer to the viewer. Her use of colour is deliberate, balancing the saturated red of the geraniums against the muted greens and yellows of the fruit. The background remains neutral, allowing the focus to stay on the interaction between the organic shapes of the plant and the rounded forms of the fruit. This work reflects the artist's interest in the quiet, everyday subjects of her immediate environment.

Dahm studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich and later spent time in Munich, where she encountered various modern movements. Her style developed into a personal form of expressionism, often marked by a focus on colour and simplified structure. This painting demonstrates her ability to capture the weight and texture of objects through a confident application of paint. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the plant countered by the horizontal spread of the fruit and the draped fabric. It is a representative example of her mid-career output, showing her move away from strict academic representation toward a more subjective interpretation of form and light.
