A robust and tactile still life by Ilya Mashkov, featuring a sliced watermelon and assorted fruits rendered with expressive, heavy brushwork.
Ilya Mashkov, a founding member of the Jack of Diamonds group, produced this work during a period of intense experimentation within the Russian avant-garde. The painting displays a characteristic focus on material weight and the physical presence of objects. Mashkov rejects the delicate nuances of traditional academic painting, opting instead for a robust application of paint that emphasises the tactile qualities of the fruit. The composition is arranged with a deliberate sense of abundance. A large, sliced watermelon dominates the foreground, its pink flesh rendered with thick, expressive brushwork that contrasts against the dark, moody background. Beside it, various melons and clusters of grapes are grouped in a manner that suggests a rustic, almost primitive vitality. The artist employs a palette of earthy tones, punctuated by the sharp, saturated pinks of the melon and the pale yellows of the gourds. This work reflects the influence of Paul Cézanne and the Fauvist movement, which Mashkov encountered during his travels in Europe. He adopts a simplified approach to form, using colour to define volume rather than relying on traditional chiaroscuro. The objects appear heavy and solid, occupying the space with a physical authority that is typical of his early twentieth-century output. By focusing on the mundane subject of a fruit spread, Mashkov elevates the everyday to a subject of serious artistic inquiry, stripping away unnecessary detail to reveal the underlying structure of his subjects. The result is a composition that feels both grounded and energetic, capturing the raw essence of the produce through a lens of modern simplification.
