Ilya Mashkov, a founding member of the Jack of Diamonds group, produced this work during a period of intense experimentation within the Russian avant-garde. Mashkov rejects the delicate nuances of traditional academic painting, opting instead for a robust application of paint that emphasises the tactile qualities of the fruit.
