A seminal example of Analytical Cubism, this work by Georges Braque deconstructs a violin into a complex arrangement of geometric planes and muted tones.
This work represents the height of Analytical Cubism, a period during which Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso systematically deconstructed traditional perspective. In this composition, the physical form of a violin is fractured into a series of overlapping planes and geometric facets. The subject is not presented as a singular, static object, but rather as a collection of visual cues that the viewer must mentally reassemble. Braque employs a restricted, monochromatic palette of ochre, grey, and brown tones. This choice of colour serves to minimise emotional distraction, allowing the focus to remain entirely on the structural arrangement of the forms. The surface is characterised by a dense network of lines and intersecting shapes that suggest the curvature of the instrument, the scroll of the neck, and the bridge, yet these elements are integrated into the surrounding space. The distinction between the object and its environment is intentionally blurred, creating a shallow, compressed pictorial depth. By breaking the violin into these constituent parts, Braque explores how we perceive objects from multiple viewpoints simultaneously. The painting avoids the illusion of three-dimensional space, favouring a flat, architectural organisation of the canvas. This approach reflects the artist's interest in the mechanics of vision and the representation of reality through abstraction. The work is a primary example of the rigorous experimentation that defined the early twentieth-century avant-garde, stripping away the decorative elements of traditional still life to examine the fundamental nature of form and space.

Co-invented Cubism with Picasso, got less credit, was shot in the head during the war, and went back to painting birds in his studio.
