Giorgio de Chirico, a central figure in the development of Metaphysical art, produced this work during a period when his focus shifted toward traditional techniques and classical subjects. While he is widely recognised for his earlier, dreamlike cityscapes, this still life demonstrates his engagement with the materiality of objects and the textures of the natural world. The composition presents a collection of grapes and fruit arranged against a stark, rocky backdrop, a recurring motif in his later oeuvre that evokes a sense of isolation and timelessness.

The application of paint is deliberate, with heavy brushwork defining the forms of the fruit and the rugged terrain. De Chirico employs a palette of earthy tones, ranging from deep ochres and browns to muted greens, which creates a sombre atmosphere.
