Elias van den Broeck, a Dutch painter active during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, produced this study of passion flowers. The composition adheres to the conventions of the Dutch Golden Age, where artists focused on the precise observation of botanical specimens. The passion flower, or Passiflora, is rendered with attention to its complex structure, including the corona and stamens. Van den Broeck places these blooms against a dark, atmospheric background, a technique used to draw the eye toward the illuminated petals and foliage.

Beyond the floral elements, the work incorporates small creatures, such as a snail and a lizard, positioned near the base of the arrangement.
