A masterful seventeenth-century still life by Clara Peeters, featuring a detailed arrangement of flowers, metalware, and confectionery on a stone ledge.
Clara Peeters was a pioneer of the still life genre in the early seventeenth century. This composition displays her technical precision and her ability to render diverse textures. The painting features a collection of objects arranged on a stone ledge, including a ceramic vase filled with a variety of flowers, a gilded tazza, a pewter flagon, and a glass of red wine. Beside these items, a dish holds an assortment of nuts and dried fruits, while a small plate contains pretzels and sweets.
Peeters uses a dark, neutral background to focus attention on the objects. The light source enters from the left, creating soft shadows and catching the metallic sheen of the flagon and the gold cup. Her attention to detail is evident in the individual petals of the roses and tulips, as well as the reflective quality of the glass and metal surfaces. The arrangement follows a balanced structure, with the floral bouquet providing a vertical element on the left, countered by the pewter vessel on the right. The central tazza acts as a visual anchor for the composition.
As a female artist working in the early 1600s, Peeters occupied a unique position in the art world. Her works were often signed, and she frequently included her own reflection in the polished surfaces of her painted objects, a subtle signature that asserts her presence as the creator. This painting is characteristic of her early period, demonstrating the meticulous observation that defined her career. The inclusion of specific luxury items, such as the imported sweets and fine metalwork, reflects the material culture of the period. The work remains a clear example of the technical standards expected in Flemish still life painting during this era.
