A detailed seventeenth-century Flemish still life featuring a variety of food items, including fruit, fish, and meat, rendered with precision.
Jacob van Hulsdonck was a Flemish painter who specialised in the genre of still life. This composition demonstrates his technical precision in rendering textures, from the smooth skin of stone fruits to the fibrous quality of raw meat. The arrangement follows the conventions of the early seventeenth-century breakfast piece, or ontbijtje, where an assortment of food items is displayed upon a table covered with a white cloth. The painting features a wicker basket overflowing with artichokes, asparagus, and various fruits, positioned to the left of the frame. Beside it, a dark platter holds a large joint of meat, while other plates contain fish, butter, and additional cuts of meat. Van Hulsdonck employs a controlled light source that illuminates the objects against a dark, neutral background, creating a sense of volume and physical presence. The inclusion of a small butterfly resting on a bone adds a subtle note of transience, a common motif in works of this period. Van Hulsdonck was known for his ability to balance individual elements within a crowded space. Each object retains its own clarity, yet the overall composition remains cohesive. The use of blue and white porcelain, alongside the reflective surfaces of the metal plates, allows the artist to experiment with light and shadow. His work is characterised by a clean, almost clinical approach to the subject matter, which distinguishes his style from the more chaotic arrangements seen in the works of some of his contemporaries. This print captures the fine details of the original panel, preserving the clarity of the brushwork and the specific tonal qualities of the seventeenth-century palette.
