Description
A still life painting by Maurice de Vlaminck, featuring a collection of everyday objects arranged with bold brushstrokes and intense, non-naturalistic colours, typical of the Fauvist style.
Maurice de Vlaminck (1876-1958) was a French painter, printmaker, and writer. He is considered one of the principal figures of the Fauve movement, a group of early 20th-century modern artists whose works emphasised painterly qualities and strong colour over the representational or realistic values retained by Impressionism. Vlaminck's style is characterised by bold brushstrokes and the use of intense, non-naturalistic colours. He was largely self-taught, which contributed to his unique and expressive approach to painting. His work often depicts landscapes and still lifes. This still life painting features a collection of everyday objects arranged on a red surface. A basket filled with fruit sits to the left, while a white bowl overflowing with fruit and draped with a white cloth occupies the centre. A dark, almost black, pitcher stands to the right. In the foreground, a silver knife and another object rest on the red surface. The composition is defined by strong, angular lines and contrasting colours, typical of Vlaminck's Fauvist style. The background is dark, which makes the objects stand out. The painting has a sense of energy and immediacy, reflecting the artist's spontaneous approach to his subject matter.
