A sombre and textured still life by Spanish Expressionist José Gutiérrez Solana, focusing on raw form and dramatic shadow.
José Gutiérrez Solana is known for his unflinching gaze upon the harsher realities of Spanish life. This composition, Still Life with Dead Turkey, reflects his characteristic preoccupation with mortality and the material world. The work avoids the decorative tendencies of traditional still life painting, opting instead for a sombre, heavy atmosphere that prioritises texture and form over aesthetic grace. The arrangement features a plucked turkey, its anatomy rendered with stark, almost clinical precision, positioned alongside various copper vessels. The metallic surfaces of the pots and pans catch the light, providing a contrast to the muted, earthy tones of the bird and the surrounding shadows. Solana uses a thick, impasto application of paint, which gives the surface a tactile quality. The lighting is dramatic, creating deep pockets of shadow that obscure the background and force the viewer to focus on the objects in the foreground. Solana’s work often draws from the tradition of Spanish tenebrism, yet he updates this approach with a modern, expressionistic sensibility. There is no attempt to idealise the subject matter. The presence of the knife and the raw state of the poultry suggest a kitchen setting, yet the treatment of the scene elevates it beyond a simple domestic study. The artist captures a sense of stillness that feels heavy and deliberate. By focusing on the physical decay and the utilitarian nature of the objects, Solana invites a contemplation of the mundane aspects of existence. This print reproduces the original oil painting with attention to the dark, moody palette and the textured brushwork that defines Solana’s unique contribution to twentieth-century Spanish art.
