An early 1904 oil painting by Raoul Dufy, featuring a rhythmic arrangement of bananas and a central vessel rendered in a bold, proto-Fauvist style.
Raoul Dufy painted this still life in 1904, a period when his work began to shift away from the influence of Impressionism towards the bolder, more experimental approaches that would define the Fauvist movement. The composition presents a collection of fruit and a central vessel, arranged on a surface that occupies the entire pictorial plane.
Dufy employs a palette dominated by deep blues and contrasting yellows. The brushwork is energetic and visible, creating a sense of movement across the canvas. Rather than seeking to replicate the exact textures of the bananas or the central object, the artist uses colour to construct form and space. The blue background acts as a unifying element, pushing the warmer tones of the fruit forward.
This work demonstrates an early interest in the decorative potential of paint. The objects are not rendered with traditional perspective; instead, they exist within a flattened, rhythmic arrangement. The bananas, curved and bright, provide a sharp contrast to the more muted, earthy tone of the central bottle. The application of paint is thick and deliberate, showing the artist's focus on the physical quality of the medium. By 1904, Dufy was actively engaging with the ideas of Henri Matisse and other contemporaries who prioritised subjective colour over naturalistic representation. This piece captures a moment of transition, where the artist experiments with the expressive power of the brush and the emotional resonance of a non-naturalistic colour scheme. It remains a clear example of his early stylistic development, showing the initial steps toward the fluid, calligraphic style he would later adopt in his more mature works.
