A precise 1822 still life by Raphaelle Peale, featuring strawberries, nuts, and porcelain, rendered with careful attention to texture and light.
Raphaelle Peale, the eldest son of Charles Willson Peale, is widely recognised as the first professional American painter to specialise in still life. This work, dated 1822, demonstrates his meticulous approach to composition and his fascination with the physical properties of objects. The arrangement features a glass bowl filled with strawberries, a single orange, a shallow dish of nuts, and two pieces of porcelain, all set against a dark, neutral background.
Peale employs a restrained palette and precise brushwork to define the textures of his subjects. The transparency of the glass, the matte surface of the nuts, and the smooth glaze of the ceramics are rendered with clinical accuracy. Unlike the more exuberant European still life traditions of the seventeenth century, Peale’s work is characterised by a quiet, orderly quality. He often utilised a shallow, shelf-like space, which forces the viewer to focus on the individual forms and their spatial relationships.
This painting reflects the artist's interest in the trompe-l'oeil effect, where the objects appear to occupy the same physical space as the observer. The inclusion of the porcelain cup, decorated with a small maritime scene, adds a layer of narrative detail to the otherwise domestic arrangement. Peale's work remains a significant example of early nineteenth-century American art, capturing a moment of stillness and domestic observation. The lighting is directional, creating soft shadows that ground the objects on the surface, while the dark void behind them ensures that the focus remains entirely on the items presented. Through this careful balance of light and shadow, Peale elevates everyday objects into a study of form, colour, and material presence.
