A precise 1874 oil painting by Thomas Eakins, capturing two men in a small catboat on the Delaware River.
Thomas Eakins painted Starting Out after Rail in 1874, a period when he focused on the recreational activities of the Delaware River. The work depicts two men in a small catboat, preparing to hunt rail birds in the marshlands. Eakins, an avid sailor himself, applied his scientific approach to perspective and anatomy to capture the precise mechanics of the boat and the figures within it.
The composition is dominated by the expansive, calm water and the clear sky, which occupy the majority of the canvas. The boat is positioned in the lower right, tilted slightly by the wind, with its sail catching the light. Eakins used a muted palette of browns, ochres, and soft blues to render the water and the atmosphere of a late summer day. The figures are rendered with careful attention to their posture and the weight they place on the vessel, reflecting the artist's interest in the physical reality of his subjects.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who sought to idealise the American outdoors, Eakins presented a direct, unvarnished view of his environment. The painting demonstrates his mastery of light and shadow, particularly in the way the sun hits the sail and the ripples on the water surface. The horizon line is kept low, which creates a sense of openness and vastness. This work is part of a larger series of rowing and sailing scenes that Eakins produced during the 1870s, documenting the leisure habits of Philadelphia residents. His technical precision, combined with his observational rigour, provides a clear window into the maritime culture of the era. The work remains a primary example of his ability to integrate human activity into the natural world without resorting to sentimentality or dramatic artifice.
