A refined ink and colour study of a horse by Xu Beihong, blending traditional Chinese brushwork with Western anatomical precision.
Xu Beihong is widely recognised for his mastery of the horse as a subject, a motif he utilised to express national spirit and personal resilience. This work, executed in ink and colour on paper, demonstrates his synthesis of traditional Chinese brushwork with Western anatomical observation. The horse is rendered with fluid, calligraphic strokes that define its musculature and posture, while the wash technique provides a sense of volume and movement.
Unlike the static depictions found in classical Chinese art, Xu Beihong’s horses possess a dynamic quality. The ink application varies from deep, saturated blacks in the mane and tail to lighter, diluted tones that suggest the horse's coat and the soft atmospheric background. The composition is balanced, with the horse positioned in the lower centre, allowing the negative space to suggest an open environment. The soft, green-tinted washes in the background provide a subtle contrast to the monochrome figure, grounding the subject without overwhelming the minimalist aesthetic.
This piece reflects the artist's training at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he refined his understanding of light, shadow, and form. Upon his return to China, he integrated these techniques into the traditional ink medium, creating a distinct style that bridged two artistic traditions. The inscription in the upper left corner provides context, identifying the date and the artist's intent. The work remains a clear example of his ability to capture the vitality of the animal through economical use of line and tone, focusing on the essential character of the subject rather than decorative detail.
