A detailed watercolour by Johannes Jelgerhuis depicting the monument of Laurens Jansz. Coster in the Grote Markt of Haarlem, surrounded by local townspeople.
This watercolour by Johannes Jelgerhuis depicts the monument of Laurens Jansz. Coster, situated in the Grote Markt of Haarlem. Jelgerhuis, a multi-talented figure who worked as both a painter and an actor, brings a theatrical sense of observation to this urban scene. The statue of Coster, the legendary Dutch inventor of the printing press, occupies the centre of the composition. It is enclosed by a simple iron railing, which provides a geometric contrast to the organic forms of the figures gathered in the square.
In the foreground, Jelgerhuis captures a slice of daily life in early nineteenth-century Haarlem. A man in a long coat gestures towards the statue, perhaps explaining its significance to the small child beside him. To the right, a street vendor with a basket stands near a man kneeling on the cobblestones, who appears to be engaged in a task related to his trade. The artist employs a muted palette, relying on subtle washes of grey, brown, and soft blue to define the architecture and the overcast sky. The light is diffused, suggesting a typical Dutch day, and the ink lines provide structure to the figures and the monument.
Jelgerhuis was known for his precise documentation of Dutch townscapes and interiors. His background in theatre is evident in the way he arranges his figures, creating a sense of narrative within the frame. The work functions as a record of the public space as it appeared during the period, capturing the intersection of civic pride and ordinary human activity. The cobblestone texture and the varied postures of the pedestrians demonstrate his attention to the details of the environment. This print offers a view into the historical atmosphere of Haarlem, preserved through the careful hand of a keen observer of the Dutch urban experience.
