Gabriele Münter, a founding member of the Der Blaue Reiter group, produced this view of the Staffelsee during her time in Murnau, Bavaria. The region became a site of artistic experimentation for Münter and her contemporaries, who sought to move away from traditional representation toward a more subjective, emotive visual language. This work captures the lake and its surrounding hills through a lens of simplified forms and bold, non-naturalistic colour choices. The composition relies on a flattened perspective, where the water, land, and distant mountains are defined by clear, dark outlines. These contours, often referred to as cloisonnism, separate the areas of colour and provide structure to the scene. Münter avoids fine detail, opting instead for broad, confident brushwork that prioritises the overall mood of the environment over topographical accuracy.
