A modernist study of the human form by Danish artist Vilhelm Lundstrøm, featuring simplified geometric shapes and a calm, muted colour palette.
Vilhelm Lundstrøm, a central figure in Danish Modernism, is recognised for his rigorous approach to form and composition. This work, Stående Model, demonstrates his characteristic reduction of the human figure into geometric components. The subject is rendered with a focus on structural clarity rather than anatomical realism. Lundstrøm employs a simplified palette and smooth, controlled brushwork to create a sense of stillness.
The figure is positioned in profile, with her hand resting near her chin in a contemplative gesture. The background is divided into two distinct tonal areas, which creates a subtle spatial tension behind the subject. By stripping away unnecessary detail, the artist directs the viewer to the essential volumes of the body and the interplay of light across the skin. This approach reflects his engagement with the principles of Purism and his desire to achieve a balanced, harmonious order within the frame.
Lundstrøm spent significant time in France during the 1920s, where he encountered the work of Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. These influences are visible in his preference for muted tones and the deliberate flattening of the pictorial space. Unlike the more chaotic experiments of early Cubism, Lundstrøm sought a stable, classical quality in his paintings. This piece is representative of his mature style, where the human form becomes a vehicle for exploring proportion and colour relationships. The result is an image that possesses a quiet, architectural presence, suitable for contemporary interiors that value clean lines and a restrained aesthetic.
