Claude Monet's 'Stack of Wheat (Snow Effect, Morning)' captures a snow-covered field with a large wheat stack, using loose brushwork and muted tones to convey the stillness of a winter morning in the French countryside.
This painting is part of Claude Monet's series of paintings depicting stacks of wheat in a field near his home in Giverny. Painted during the winter of 1890-91, this work captures the transient effects of light and atmosphere on the rural scene. Monet rented a space to store the canvases, allowing him to work on several at once, capturing the same subject under different conditions. He exhibited fifteen of the paintings from the series at the Galerie Durand-Ruel in 1891. The painting shows a large stack of wheat covered in snow, dominating the foreground. The surrounding field is also blanketed in snow, with subtle variations in colour suggesting the play of light. In the background, a line of trees and distant hills are rendered in soft, muted tones of blue and grey. Monet's brushwork is loose and broken, with individual strokes of colour blending together to create a shimmering effect. The overall impression is one of stillness and tranquility, capturing the quiet beauty of a winter morning in the French countryside.
