A lithograph by Pierre Bonnard depicting a woman washing, rendered in fluid, expressive lines that capture a quiet, domestic moment.
This lithograph by Pierre Bonnard captures a private, domestic moment: a woman standing as she washes. Bonnard, a member of the Nabis group, frequently turned his attention to the intimate rituals of daily life. His work often focuses on the female form within the confines of a bathroom or bedroom, using light and shadow to define space rather than rigid architectural lines.
The composition relies on a series of quick, rhythmic marks. The artist uses a monochromatic palette, allowing the texture of the lithographic stone to inform the visual weight of the figure. The background is suggested through vertical strokes, which create a sense of depth without overwhelming the subject. The figure stands on a small mat, her posture relaxed and naturalistic. Bonnard avoids idealisation, choosing instead to document the quiet reality of the scene.
Edmond Frapier, a publisher and art dealer, commissioned several series of prints from Bonnard during the 1920s. These editions were intended to bring high-quality graphic work to a wider audience of collectors. This particular print reflects the artist's interest in the interplay between the figure and her surroundings. The lines are fluid and spontaneous, characteristic of Bonnard's graphic style during this period. By stripping away unnecessary detail, he directs the viewer to the essential form and the atmosphere of the room. The work remains a study in observation, capturing a fleeting instance of stillness. It demonstrates the artist's ability to transform a mundane activity into a subject of artistic interest through economy of line and tonal variation.
