A delicate watercolour figure study by Dutch artist Gesina ter Borch, featuring a standing woman in period attire, taken from her personal seventeenth-century album.
This delicate watercolour, attributed to the Dutch artist Gesina ter Borch, originates from her personal album, a collection that offers a rare glimpse into the private artistic life of a seventeenth-century woman. Ter Borch was a member of a prominent family of painters in Zwolle, and her work often reflects the domestic and social spheres of the Dutch Golden Age. Unlike the large-scale oil paintings produced by her brother Gerard ter Borch, her output consists primarily of intimate drawings and watercolours, frequently accompanied by poetry or song lyrics.
The figure depicted is a standing woman, rendered with a focus on the texture and colour of her attire. She wears a dark bodice, a white collar, and a voluminous skirt in a muted red tone, with a fur-trimmed wrap draped over her shoulders. The artist uses fine ink lines to define the contours of the figure, while the watercolour application remains restrained, allowing the paper to provide the primary light source. The figure is positioned at the base of a page filled with handwritten Dutch text, a common format in her albums where visual imagery and literary expression exist in tandem.
This piece provides insight into the amateur artistic practices of the period, where drawing served as a form of social documentation and personal reflection. The figure is captured in a moment of quiet stillness, her hands clasped before her. The composition is sparse, prioritising the subject against the expansive negative space of the manuscript page. The work is preserved within the Rijksmuseum collection, which holds the majority of ter Borch's surviving albums. It remains a significant example of the intersection between visual art and manuscript culture in the Netherlands during the mid-seventeenth century.
