A study of Christ as the Man of Sorrows by Venetian artist Pietro Antonio III Novelli, rendered in pen and grey wash.
This work by the Venetian artist Pietro Antonio III Novelli depicts the Man of Sorrows, a traditional iconographic subject representing Christ in his suffering. Novelli, active during the eighteenth century, was known for his fluid draughtsmanship and his ability to capture emotional gravity through minimal means. In this study, the figure of Christ stands in a contrapposto pose, draped in a heavy mantle that obscures part of his frame while drawing attention to the crown of thorns and the reed held in his hand.
The execution relies on a combination of precise pen lines and tonal grey washes. Novelli uses the wash to create depth and volume, particularly in the folds of the drapery and the shadowed background. The diagonal hatching in the background provides a sense of space, pushing the figure forward. The artist avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the anatomical structure and the solemn expression of the subject. The paper tone remains visible, acting as a mid-tone that balances the darker ink applications.
Novelli was a prolific illustrator and painter, often working in a style that bridged the late Baroque and the emerging Neoclassical aesthetic. His drawings frequently served as preparatory studies for larger compositions or as independent works for collectors. This particular piece demonstrates his command of light and shadow, a technique that allows the figure to emerge from the page with a sense of quiet presence. The signature at the bottom confirms the attribution to Novelli, whose work remains a clear example of the Venetian school of drawing during the late eighteenth century. This print captures the texture of the original paper and the subtle variations in the ink wash, offering a faithful reproduction of the artist's hand.
