This academic figure study, executed in red chalk, represents a standard exercise in the training of nineteenth-century artists. Abraham Lion Zeelander produced this work in 1808, earning a third prize for his technical proficiency. The drawing depicts a male nude from the rear, leaning against a block-like structure. The artist employs the sanguine medium to model the musculature of the back, shoulders, and legs, using hatching to suggest volume and light.
Academic training during this period prioritised the mastery of the human form through rigorous observation of live models. Students were expected to demonstrate anatomical accuracy and a controlled application of tone. Zeelander uses the red chalk to create soft transitions between light and shadow, defining the contours of the spine and the tension in the calves. The composition is balanced, with the figure positioned to allow for a clear analysis of posture and weight distribution.
In the lower left corner, an inscription confirms the work's status as a prize-winning entry.
