An academic figure study of a standing male nude, created by Marten Houtman in 1770 as a prize-winning exercise in anatomical precision.
This academic figure study by Marten Houtman, dated 1770, captures a standing male nude viewed from the rear. The work earned the artist a first prize, a common accolade within the rigorous training systems of eighteenth-century Dutch art academies. Such drawings were central to the curriculum, requiring students to demonstrate mastery of human anatomy, proportion, and the play of light across musculature.
Houtman employs a disciplined technique, using chalk on toned paper to build form through hatching and cross-hatching. The light source, positioned to the upper left, creates clear highlights on the shoulder blades and the curve of the spine, while the shadows define the contours of the glutes and legs. The figure leans slightly against a support, a pose that allows the artist to explore the tension in the back muscles and the weight distribution of the body.
The inscription in the upper right corner, '1e Prys 1770', confirms the work's status as a competition piece. These studies were not intended for public exhibition but functioned as evidence of a student's progress in mastering the classical tradition. The focus remains entirely on the physical structure of the model, stripped of narrative or environmental context. The artist's control over the medium is evident in the subtle transitions between shadow and light, which provide a sense of volume and weight to the figure. This print offers a clear view of the technical expectations placed upon young artists during the late eighteenth century, reflecting the period's emphasis on anatomical accuracy and the study of the antique.
