A masterful Baroque oil painting by Bernardo Strozzi, capturing the compassionate interaction between St. Peter and a beggar through dramatic light and shadow.
Bernardo Strozzi, a central figure in the Genoese Baroque, demonstrates his mastery of light and human emotion in this depiction of a biblical narrative. The scene captures the moment St. Peter reaches out to the lame beggar, an act of healing described in the Acts of the Apostles. Strozzi employs a tenebrist approach, where deep shadows contrast with the illuminated faces and hands of the figures, drawing the viewer into the intimacy of the exchange.
The composition focuses on the physical connection between the two men. St. Peter, depicted with a weathered face and a thick, grey beard, looks down with a calm, compassionate expression. His hand rests firmly upon the arm of the beggar, who is shown in profile, his posture suggesting a mixture of anticipation and physical frailty. To the right, a third figure observes the interaction, his gaze directed outward, which invites the viewer to participate in the unfolding event.
Strozzi’s brushwork is fluid and confident, a characteristic trait of his mature period. He avoids rigid outlines, preferring to define form through the application of paint and the manipulation of light. The colour palette is restrained, dominated by earthy tones, ochres, and deep browns, which allows the subtle red of the beggar's garment to provide a quiet visual anchor. The background remains largely obscured, ensuring that the psychological weight of the encounter remains the primary focus. This work reflects the artist's ability to translate complex theological themes into human terms, prioritising the tactile quality of the figures and the emotional resonance of the gesture over elaborate architectural settings or decorative detail. It is a representative example of the naturalistic tendencies that defined much of the Italian Baroque tradition during the early seventeenth century.
