A cityscape by German Expressionist August Macke, depicting St. Mary's church in Bonn with houses and a chimney, rendered in bold, flat planes of colour.
August Macke (1887-1914) was a German Expressionist painter, one of the leading members of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). Macke's work is characterised by its bright colours, simplified forms, and interest in depicting modern urban life. He was killed in action during World War I at the age of 27. This painting presents a view of St. Mary's church in Bonn, Germany, surrounded by houses and a prominent chimney. The composition is structured with bold, flat planes of colour, typical of Macke's Expressionist style. The buildings are rendered in shades of red, orange, and yellow, with blue roofs providing contrast. A tall, red chimney stands out against the sky, adding an industrial element to the urban scene. The sky is painted in broad strokes of light blue, creating a sense of openness. The overall effect is a simplified, yet evocative, representation of the urban environment.
