A delicate nineteenth-century engraving by Edward Goodall, depicting a picturesque Mediterranean chapel scene with figures by a stone fountain.
Edward Goodall was a prominent British engraver, known for his technical precision and his frequent collaborations with J.M.W. Turner. This engraving depicts St. Julienne's Chapel, rendered with the delicate line work characteristic of nineteenth-century book illustration. The composition employs a vignette style, where the image fades into the surrounding paper, a common technique for plates intended for literary volumes or travelogues of the period.
The scene presents a quiet, Mediterranean-inspired architectural setting. In the foreground, figures gather near a stone fountain, providing a sense of scale to the structure. The middle ground features a series of steps leading toward an arched gateway, while the background reveals the chapel itself, flanked by slender cypress trees. The architectural details, including the arched windows and the tower, suggest a Romanesque influence. Goodall uses fine cross-hatching to define the shadows and textures of the stone, creating a sense of depth despite the small scale of the work.
This print captures the Romantic fascination with European travel and historical architecture. The inclusion of figures in period dress suggests a narrative quality, common in the illustrated travel literature of the era. The soft, tonal quality of the engraving reflects the high standards of British printmaking during the mid-nineteenth century. The work remains a fine example of the period's preference for picturesque scenes, where human activity is harmoniously integrated with classical or religious architecture. The paper shows signs of age, consistent with its history as a plate from a published collection, adding to its character as a historical artefact.
