A 1511 woodcut by Hans Baldung Grien depicting Saint Jerome with his lion in a forest setting, showcasing the technical precision of Northern Renaissance printmaking.
This woodcut by Hans Baldung Grien, dated 1511, depicts Saint Jerome in his traditional penitential setting. The saint is shown kneeling in a forest, his emaciated form reflecting the ascetic life he led while translating the Vulgate Bible. Beside him rests his constant companion, the lion, from whose paw he famously removed a thorn. The composition is typical of the Northern Renaissance, where the figure is integrated into a dense, natural environment that feels both wild and structured.
Baldung Grien, a pupil of Albrecht Dürer, demonstrates his mastery of the woodcut medium through the use of varied line weights. The hatching creates a sense of volume in the saint's anatomy and the gnarled bark of the surrounding trees. In the background, a small architectural structure sits against a hilly horizon, providing a sense of distance and scale. The inclusion of the cardinal's hat on the ground serves as a reminder of Jerome's ecclesiastical rank, which he abandoned for a life of solitude and study. The artist's monogram, HB, is visible in the lower right corner, accompanied by the date of production.
This print captures the tension between the human figure and the untamed forest. The lines are sharp and deliberate, characteristic of the German printmaking tradition of the early sixteenth century. The work functions as a meditation on devotion and the scholarly pursuit of faith. By focusing on the physical reality of the saint, Baldung Grien avoids overly sentimental depictions, opting instead for a raw, honest portrayal of the hermit's existence. The interplay of light and shadow, achieved through the woodcut technique, gives the scene a tactile quality that invites close inspection of the textures of the foliage, the lion's mane, and the saint's weathered skin.
