Paolo Uccello, a master of the Early Renaissance, produced this depiction of the legend of Saint George around 1470. The composition is characteristic of his fascination with perspective and geometric form. The scene is divided into distinct zones: the princess stands to the left, the dragon occupies the centre, and the knight on horseback approaches from the right.
The dragon, with its bat-like wings and scaled body, is positioned against a large, angular rock formation that suggests a cave entrance. Uccello employs a flattened, almost theatrical sense of space, where the figures appear as if on a stage. The background features a walled city and a cultivated field, rendered with a systematic approach to depth that was typical of the artist's experiments with linear perspective.
Saint George is shown in full armour, his lance piercing the dragon's mouth. The white horse is depicted with a rigid, almost sculptural quality. The princess, dressed in a long red gown, watches the encounter with a calm, detached demeanour.
