A detailed 1839 lithograph by Thomas Shotter Boys, depicting the church of St. Etienne du Mont and the Pantheon in Paris.
This lithograph originates from the 1839 publication, Picturesque Architecture in Paris, Ghent, Antwerp, Rouen. Thomas Shotter Boys, a British artist and printmaker, produced this collection to document the architectural character of European cities. His work captures the transition between the medieval and classical styles present in the French capital.
The composition focuses on the church of St. Etienne du Mont, with its distinctive Renaissance facade and Gothic tower. In the distance, the dome of the Pantheon rises above the surrounding structures. Boys employs a sophisticated tonal range, using light and shadow to define the stone textures and the depth of the urban space. The inclusion of small figures in the foreground provides a sense of scale, grounding the monumental architecture in the daily life of the city.
Boys trained as an engraver before moving to Paris, where he became acquainted with Richard Parkes Bonington. This association influenced his approach to light and atmospheric effects. His lithographs are noted for their technical precision and their ability to convey the specific mood of a location. By using multiple stone layers, he achieved a depth of tone that mimics the qualities of a watercolour painting. This print offers a view of Paris before the extensive urban renovations of the mid-nineteenth century, preserving a specific historical configuration of the city's streets and monuments. The work remains a primary source for understanding the appearance of these sites during the early Victorian period.
