A dreamlike, atmospheric scene by Matthijs Maris, featuring a solitary figure in a muted, ethereal landscape.
Matthijs Maris, a member of the influential Maris brothers, moved away from the realistic traditions of the Hague School towards a more subjective, dreamlike aesthetic. Sprookje, which translates to Fairy Tale, captures this shift. The composition features a solitary female figure in a flowing gown, positioned in a hazy, atmospheric environment. Her posture suggests a quiet interaction with the ducks near the water, yet the scene remains detached from literal narrative.
Maris employed a technique involving thin, layered glazes and a muted palette of greys, ochres, and soft browns. This approach obscures fine detail, creating a sense of distance and mystery. The background foliage is rendered with loose, indistinct brushwork, which pushes the figure into a state of semi-isolation. The light is diffused, lacking a clear source, which contributes to the ethereal quality of the work.
Unlike his earlier, more precise paintings, this work prioritises mood over clarity. The surface texture is built up through repeated applications of paint, resulting in a weathered appearance that aligns with the artist's later, more reclusive period. This piece reflects the transition in late nineteenth-century European art toward internalised, symbolic subject matter. The figure does not engage with the viewer, but exists within her own private, quiet world. It is an example of the artist's ability to transform a simple rural scene into a meditation on memory and imagination. The lack of sharp edges or defined contours forces the eye to wander across the canvas, absorbing the tonal shifts rather than focusing on specific forms. This print captures the subtle nuances of the original oil painting, preserving the delicate balance between the figure and the surrounding environment.
