Kimon Loghi, a Romanian painter of Greek descent, produced this study of a woodland scene during the early twentieth century. The work captures the transition of the seasons through a focus on light and colour. Loghi employs a technique characterised by thick, visible brushwork, which allows the paint to sit heavily upon the canvas surface. This approach creates a tactile quality, where the texture of the oil medium becomes as important as the subject itself.

The composition is dominated by a central tree, its foliage rendered in bright, luminous yellows that suggest the arrival of spring. The surrounding environment is treated with a similar looseness, with the ground and distant foliage dissolving into soft, atmospheric patches of colour.
