A traditional Ming Dynasty ink and silk painting by Xie Shichen, depicting a scholar and deer in a serene, mountainous spring setting.
Xie Shichen, a painter active during the mid-Ming Dynasty, is recognised for his mastery of the shan shui tradition. This work displays the characteristic ink wash techniques of the period, where tonal variations create a sense of atmospheric depth. The composition follows a vertical format, common in hanging scrolls, which allows for a tiered arrangement of rocky outcrops and distant peaks.
In the foreground, a gnarled plum tree dominates the scene, its branches reaching across the frame. Beneath this tree, a scholar sits in quiet contemplation, accompanied by a deer. These figures are small in scale, reflecting the traditional Chinese emphasis on the human presence as a minor element within the vastness of the natural world. The deer, often associated with longevity and scholarly virtue, adds a layer of symbolic meaning to the setting.
The ink work employs a range of brush strokes, from the dry, textured lines defining the rock formations to the softer, more fluid applications used for the mist and clouds. The palette is restrained, relying on subtle washes of ink and light colour to evoke the transition of spring. The distant architecture, perched upon a high cliff, suggests a secluded retreat, further reinforcing the theme of withdrawal from worldly affairs. This piece demonstrates the technical precision and philosophical depth associated with the literati painting tradition of the sixteenth century.
