A late-career masterpiece by Jean-François Millet, capturing a blossoming orchard under a dramatic, rain-washed sky in the French countryside.
Jean-François Millet painted this work during the final years of his life, representing a shift in his focus toward pure nature. While he is primarily recognised for his depictions of peasant labour, this composition captures the atmospheric conditions of the French countryside near Barbizon. The scene depicts a fruit orchard in bloom following a rain shower, with a double rainbow arching across a dark, heavy sky. The contrast between the storm clouds and the illuminated, blossoming trees creates a sense of transition. Technically, the work demonstrates the artist's interest in the effects of light on the natural world. The foreground remains in shadow, rendered with earthy tones, while the middle ground receives a sudden burst of sunlight. This illumination draws the eye toward the flowering trees, which appear almost luminous against the gloom. The path leading into the distance provides a sense of depth, guiding the viewer through the orchard toward the horizon. Millet employed a textured application of paint to suggest the rough bark of the trees and the damp, uneven ground. This painting belongs to a series of four works commissioned by Frédéric Hartmann, each representing a season. It remains one of the most celebrated examples of the Barbizon School, a group of artists who moved away from the formal constraints of the studio to paint directly from the environment. The work avoids the idealised pastoral tropes common in the nineteenth century, opting instead for a grounded, observational approach to the rural environment. The inclusion of the rainbow adds a fleeting, ephemeral quality to the scene, capturing a specific moment in time rather than a static view. It is a study of light, weather, and the cyclical nature of the seasons, rendered with the gravity and attention to detail characteristic of the artist's later period.
