A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, depicting figures on the shore at Futamigaura Bay with the iconic wedded rocks in the distance.
Utagawa Kuniyoshi, a master of the Utagawa school, produced this woodblock print during the mid-nineteenth century. The composition depicts a scene at Futamigaura Bay, a location known for its sacred Meoto Iwa, or wedded rocks, which appear in the background. The print features a woman and a child on the shore, rendered with the characteristic line work and colour application associated with the period.
Kuniyoshi demonstrates his skill in textile representation through the patterned kimono worn by the central figure. The floral motifs are balanced by the geometric patterns on the child's garment. The artist employs a limited but effective palette, using deep blues for the sea and the garments, contrasted against the lighter tones of the sky and the dark sand of the beach. The horizon line is marked by a subtle gradient, suggesting the transition of light at dawn or dusk.
This work belongs to a broader tradition of Japanese printmaking that sought to capture both the natural beauty of the coastline and the daily lives of its inhabitants. The inclusion of the small child and the specific details of the clothing provide a sense of narrative, typical of Kuniyoshi's approach to genre subjects. The print remains a clear example of the technical precision achieved by Edo-period artisans, from the initial drawing to the final carving and printing stages. The composition maintains a sense of balance, with the figures occupying the foreground while the iconic rocks provide a recognisable geographical anchor. Collectors of Japanese art will appreciate the preservation of the original colour blocks and the clarity of the printed lines.
