A hanging scroll by Nagasawa Rosetsu depicting a gathering of sparrows within a plum tree, rendered in ink and colour on silk.
Nagasawa Rosetsu, a student of Maruyama Okyo, occupies a distinct position within the Edo period art scene. This hanging scroll demonstrates his technical facility with ink and colour on silk, capturing a gathering of sparrows amidst the branches of a plum tree. The composition balances the organic, gnarled forms of the tree with the varied postures of the birds, ranging from those in flight to others perched in clusters along the boughs.
Rosetsu is known for his unconventional approach to traditional subjects. While the kacho-ga (bird and flower) genre often adheres to strict formal conventions, this work displays a sense of movement and spontaneity. The ink wash technique provides depth to the plum branches, while subtle applications of colour define the plumage of the sparrows. The artist uses negative space effectively, allowing the eye to travel through the vertical orientation of the scroll, following the birds as they navigate the flowering tree.
The inclusion of a few rose-like blossoms near the base adds a specific botanical detail that contrasts with the plum flowers. Rosetsu’s brushwork remains precise yet fluid, reflecting the training he received under the Maruyama school, which prioritised direct observation of nature. The work is signed and sealed by the artist, confirming its place within his body of work. This print captures the original tonal qualities of the silk, preserving the balance between the muted background and the carefully rendered subjects. It offers a view into the aesthetic priorities of late eighteenth-century Japanese painting, where technical skill and naturalistic observation were held in high regard.
